Under the Simply Spotlight

Episode 1

By Barry Donnelly

So it’s the first week of February and I don’t know about you but I am still wondering where 2016 went. The New Year is usually a time to reflect upon the year that has passed. It is also a great time to look at your life and make decisions about what you would like to change and that is how we arrive with our New Years Resolutions. Over the past 3 weeks I have also been thinking about what new content we can provide to you, our valued customers.

The main “resolution” Simply Computing has made for 2017 is for us to bring you more information about our staff, our stores, our services and our product selection. We have employees who have been with Simply Computing since the beginning, others who have made Canada their home and others who love technology and love showing our customers how it can be used to help better their everyday lives.

Each month we will interview staff members from across our stores to give a greater insight into the staff you interact with. Our first staff member to go “Under the Simply Spotlight” is Ian Carter. When and where were you born?
I was born in Abbotsford on Valentine’s Day ’89. Bonus fact: I share my birthday with my Grandma.

What was your first job?
My first ‘job’ was helping my uncle build a fence for a week. My first real job, however, was working at Wendy’s in Kelowna where I grew up.

What is your current position?
I’m currently the Store Manager at the Abbotsford Simply Computing in Sevenoaks Mall.

Where did you work before joining Simply Computing?
I worked at EB Games for just over seven years, being a store Manager for 5 of those years. That job gave me many of the skills I’ve carried over into this job.

What is your favourite product in the store right now?
Easily the Herschel bags we carry. They’re pretty awesome and I look forward to the new ones we’ll be getting when the seasons change.

Favourite thing about working with Simply?
Being able to educate people who don’t think they can’t do something with their device. Having them leave with whatever they learned that day is extremely satisfying.

3 words you would use to describe working in Simply Computing?
Challenging, Satisfying, Fun

If you had to eat one meal for the rest of your life what would it be?
I don’t think I could eat one thing the rest of my life, but if I absolutely had to pick something it would be pasta.

What music are you listening to right now?
I’ve actually obsessed with a band called Marina and the Diamonds the last few months. I’m also a huge Linkin Park fan and will welcome all cheers or jeers for that response.

What is your most memorable travel experience?
When I was 21 I traveled to a country called Malta to visit my girlfriend at the time who was going to school there. Two weeks eating 1 Euro pizza and collecting rain water for my showers. Definitely a cool experience.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I play a lot of video games (Destiny, Xcom, Skyrim) and I also like to write. I’ve been working on my current idea for around 8 months now.
