Welcome to our blog feature, “Under the Simply Spotlight”, where we spoke to one of our longest standing staff members for their insights into working at Simply Computing. Each month we put one of our staff under the spotlight so that you can get to know the people who provide our outstanding service. For this edition, we spoke to Dick Wareham, who has been with Simply Computing for over 30 years. So read on for a short interview that gives a flavour of who we are.
What was your first job
1964 I started as an office assistant at a real estate developer/surveyor’s office. Finally working in the field as a land surveyor
What’s your current position in Simply Computing, and how long have you been in this role?
I contract my services to Simply Computing completing inventory audits, assist the buyer and complete all the custom Apple CPU orders. I’ve been in this particular role since 2008.
Where did you work before coming to Simply Computing?
Scotiabank where I worked for 15 years in consumer credit and audit. In 1985 I joined Strider Computers with Gary Gumley and Colin Dawes (the initial company that later became Simply Computing in 1990). As an aside, I picked the name Simply Computing which emphasized the ease of use of Apple and presenting computing in layman’s terms without all the Computer(Nerd) Jargon.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
What is spare time haha? I keep myself busy though, in my spare time I enjoy stamp collecting as a hobby. I also like giving back through community service through Rotary. Currently, I’m assisting in the Starfish project
, which provides two breakfasts, two lunches, two dinners and snacks for local vulnerable children to take home every weekend. So that is something I really enjoy!
What’s your most memorable travel experience?
Camping on the shores of Lake Como in Italy in 1962. Then returning to camp to see it all washed out and laughing only to discover my tent was one of those that was swept away. Altogether it was a great trip though, I enjoyed sampling ice cream throughout Europe, and yes, Italian really is the best.
What’s you favourite food?
That’s a tough one, the Italian ice cream comes close! But I would have to go for steak. A very close second is liver and onions though.
Do you have any advice for anyone starting out in the technology industry?
My advice would be to devour knowledge and find a niche that gives you a specialty. Tech is changing fast and having a specialty is going to really stand to you.
